但是,我畫的不是一頂帽子,畫裡代表的是一條蟒蛇正在消化著一頭大象。為了讓這些大人們能夠瞭解,我隻好又畫了一張畫:我把大蟒蛇肚子裡的環境畫了出來――這些大人們老是需求解釋。我的第二號作品是如許的:

以是從當時起,我挑選了彆的一個職業,我學會了開飛機。我幾近飛遍了天下的每個角落。的確,地理學對我非常有效。飛過天下各地的我一眼就能辯白出中國和亞利桑那州。如果夜裡丟失了航向,如許的知識是很有代價的。
小時候,當時我還隻要6歲,看到一本描述原始叢林壯觀氣象的書,名叫《實在的故事》。書裡有一幅很出色的插畫,畫的是一條大蟒蛇正在吞食一隻植物,上麵就是那幅插畫的覆成品。
他們答覆我說:“一頂帽子有甚麼驚駭的呢?”
此次大人們做出的反應是:他們建議我把這些畫著看起來彷彿敞開肚皮的蟒蛇的丹青放在一邊,然後把精力放在地理、汗青、計算和語法上。這就是為甚麼,在我六歲時,我放棄了成為一名職業畫家的斑斕胡想。第一號、第二號作品的不勝利,令我非常懊喪。這些大人們本身甚麼都不懂,還需求孩子們不竭地、不竭地解釋給他們聽,這真是令人感到膩煩。
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
我想了很多熱帶叢林的冒險,幾經思考,我拿起彩色鉛筆終究勝利地完成了我人生中的第一幅繪畫。我的第一號作品,它是如許的:
I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: "Frighten Why should any one be frightened by a hat"My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
